Botulinum Toxin Procedures
Wrinkle treatment
The cosmetic treatment of facial wrinkles may be carried out with the botulinum toxin, also known as „botox”. This is a neurotoxin protein which blocks the transmission of the nerve impulses to the muscles in the injected area and produces chemical denervation of the muscles, which leads to temporary paresis of the injected groups of muscles.
Good to know:
- Unlike the hyaluronic acid, the effect of the botox is not immediate but becomes apparent in 24 hours after it is injected, and the final results may be accurately evaluated after 7 to 14 days.
- Injections with the botulinum toxin smooth the horizontal wrinkles on the forehead, around the eyes, the „goose foot” (wrinkles at the corners of the eyes) and the vertical wrinkles between eyebrows.
- The treatment with botulinum toxin lasts approximately 20 minutes, depending on the treated area. The required number of injections varies between 4 and 10. Subsequent treatments should be administered in no less than 4 to 6 months after the first injection and in no less than 10 to 12 months after the second injection.
Hyperhidrosis
Many people are confronted with the unpleasant effects of profuse sweating. Fortunately, in most cases, the issue may be resolved easily and effectively with good body hygiene and the use of an antiperspirant. However, a medical or surgical treatment may be required in certain cases.
Focal hyperhidrosis affects certain body areas such as the palms, armpits, soles or face. Typically, the condition occurs during puberty and disappears gradually in adulthood.
General hyperhidrosis, on the other hand, is generally caused by hormonal disorders such as obesity, psychiatric disorders or menopause. A relatively new treatment for excessive sweating involves the use of botox.
The treatment consists in injecting botox in the profusely sweating areas such as the armpit, palms, soles or even face. Botox is most widely used for the treatment of wrinkles and is less known for its ability to treat any form of sweating disorder.
Good to know:
- Before using botox to treat excessive sweating, the affected areas and the cause of the disorder need to be determined.
- Botox injection blocks nerve impulses to the sweat glands responsible for producing sweat, effectively deactivating them and preventing sweating in the injected area for a period of 6 to 12 months.
- Currently the use of the botulinum toxin is the treatment of choice in stopping sweat production, because it has the best results and no side effects.
